Spring Birding in the NC Smokies
Come meet the fine feathered friends of Haywood County! Early spring is a perfect time for birding in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains.  You can utilize the NC Birding Trail, and their website’s interactive map where you can pinpoint good viewing locations: www.ncbirdingtrail.org Haywood County is one of the highlighted areas on the map and offers seven suggested areas in the county that boast an abundance of bird species. Each section provides a description of the location, a list of potential bird species and their seasonality, directions and other related information that will be helpful before and during your visit. There is also a local birding club right here in Haywood County, The Great Smoky Mountains Audubon Club: www.gsmas.org. The group works to promote and bring awareness to the hobby of birding and is a great reference for those interested in birding. The group highlighted Lake Junaluska as one of county’s birding “hotspots” due to easy access and open bodies of water.  The water will attract a wide variety of birds, especially those that rely on aquatic plants and animals as a food source. Among the many varieties of birds that have made themselves at home by the lake, there is a resident bald eagle that can often be seen soaring high over the water or perched a top a tree. Just the chance the spot this regal creature is well worth the trip!

SIX REASONS TO VISIT CARLSBAD NOW

West Inn & Suites, Rated #1 in Carlsbad by TripAdvisor, Ranks the Top Reasons to Visit this Sunny Seaside Destination in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – March 10, 2015 – With nearly perfect weather, endless options for outdoor recreation and access to world-class attractions, no other destination echoes ‘endless summer’ quite like the seaside community of Carlsbad. West Inn & Suites, Carlsbad’s premier boutique hotel, has ranked the top reasons to plan a getaway to Carlsbad.

  1. The Beach

Soak in the sun and the sand on one of Carlsbad’s five gorgeous beaches or grab a surfboard and hit the waves. For the full beach experience, check out West Inn & Suites’ Pop-Up Beach Party experience, which includes complimentary round-trip transportation to any of Carlsbad’s beaches and a fully packed van with boogie boards, chairs, umbrellas, towels and beach toys.

2. Guided Craft Brewery Tours

The 60-mile stretch that connects Carlsbad and Oceanside to the small mountain town of Julian is fondly nicknamed California’s “Hops Highway.” Linking a cluster of microbreweries to some of San Diego’s biggest names in beer, notable stops include Mother Earth, The Lost Abbey and Stone Brewery. The Hops Highway Retreat, a customized beer adventure package from West Inn & Suites, includes a round-trip tour of three breweries, snacks and water, and transportation in a luxury vehicle.

3. The Flowers are Blooming

For over sixty years, Mother Nature has transformed the rolling hills of north San Diego county into one of the most spectacular displays of natural color with over 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers that bloom through early May at The Flower Fields.

4. Quirky, Fun Museums
Trade in those traditional rainy-day museums for a visit to some of Carlsbad’s most fun and quirky collections. The Museum of Making Music shares music history and vast collections of vintage, unusual and interactive instruments; while the GIA: Gemological Institute Of America has been showcasing some of the world’s rarest gemstones and jewels since 1931. Just a stone’s throw away, guests can learn all about Southern California’s surf culture and history at the California Surf Museum in neighboring Oceanside.
5. You Don’t Need a Car

Cave Hill Cemetery announces 2016 tour and lecture schedule

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 11, 2016) – Louisville’s iconic Cave Hill Cemetery has announced its 2016 tour and lecture schedule.  This year’s tour will include a historical walking tour, a twilight wagon tour, two different Civil War tours, an “art and artists” tour, and, new this year, a “remarkable women of Cave Hill” tour.  Two lectures are also scheduled.  The tours will begin in April and run through October, and are sponsored by the Cave Hill Heritage Foundation.

Cave Hill Cemetery is Louisville’s only Victorian, rural-garden style cemetery.  It was dedicated in July of 1848, and has grown to its current size of 296 acres.  It is an outdoor “museum” with hundreds of beautifully carved granite and marble monuments.  It is also one of the finest arboretums in the United States.  The cemetery has over 500 varieties of trees and shrubs.  Its five lakes provide the perfect home for its sizable waterfowl collection.  Once removed from the bustle of the city, Cave Hill is now an island of peace surrounded by the city’s hustle and bustle.
Several notables are buried at Cave Hill, including Louisville founder and Revolutionary War Hero General George Rogers Clark and Colonel Harlan Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken.  The cemetery is also the final resting place of both Union and Confederate soldiers of the Civil War.

The Twilight “Wagon” Tour kicks off the tour season on April 30.  Enjoy a ride on a rustic hay wagon with local historians as they explore all 296-acres of Cave Hill Cemetery.

Two walking tours begin in May, as well as the new “Remarkable Women of Cave Hill Tour.”  “Remarkable Women” begins on May 1 and tells the story of some of Cave Hill’s most influential women.  The Civil War Historical Walking Tour begins May 14, and the Historical Walking Tour begins May 22.  All three of these tours are on foot and focus on specific areas of the cemetery.  There is an evening Civil War Wagon Tour on June 4.

And finally, the “Art & Artists of Cave Hill” tour will be held on October 2.  Several of the tours above have repeat dates throughout the spring and summer months.  All have a cost associated with them, and some are limited to the number that can attend.

The two lectures in this season include one on beginning beekeeping and the other on Cave Hills place in Louisville.  The “Role of Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville” will be held on June 28 at the St. Matthews Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library at 2:30 p.m.  It is free to attend.

The date for the beekeeping workshop has not been announced.  It will be held at the cemetery and is limited to 24 people.  The cost is $10.

For more information, including all dates and costs of all the tours and lectures, please call 502.451.5630 or visithttp://www.cavehillheritagefoundation.org/

JWB PRIME STEAK AND SEAFOOD OPENS DOORS AT MARGARITAVILLE HOLLYWOOD BEACH RESORT

Hollywood Beach, Fla. Gets New Laid-Back Luxe Dining Option with Fresh Seafood,
Spear-Caught Fish, Raw Bar, Prime Steaks, Hand-Crafted Specialty Cocktails & More

Hollywood, Fla. – March  15, 2016 – The new Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, located on the legendary Hollywood Beach Broadwalk in Hollywood, Fla., today announced that its eighth and final food and beverage venue is open for business.  JWB Prime Steak and Seafood, an all-new concept introduced by the Margaritaville brand, gives local residents and resort guests the chance to enjoy exquisitely fresh cuisine in a unique coastal-luxe setting.

“JWB is an entirely new concept for Margaritaville and we could not be more delighted to have it make its debut at our beautiful new resort,” said Cate Farmer, General Manager. “This restaurant carefully combines the very best elements of the Margaritaville lifestyle in an intimate and casual yet sophisticated atmosphere we believe people will find truly refreshing.”

JWB, named after James (Jimmy) William Buffett, is situated in the main lobby of the new Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort.  Inspired by the Margaritaville lifestyle with authentic yet upscale South Florida touches, the restaurant features a full bar, as well as a main dining room that seats up to 135 guests.  A private dining room is also available for small groups and business or social functions.

Key elements of the coastal-luxe venue’s design include a wine cellar wall and open-air kitchen.  Feature walls of handpicked reclaimed brick compliment aged hardwood floors and tropically inspired elegant deep ocean blue drapes.  Venetian plaster walls and European glass mosaics brighten the space, highlighting a 30-foot long work of original art. Unique bar stools (pictured right) are upholstered with imprinted rum labeled fabric modeled after long gone distilleries in the Caribbean, which provide a fun-felt welcome to arriving guests.

JWB’s extensive hand-crafted cocktail menu includes the Blue Heaven Rendezvous, an acai-blueberry vodka based drink with blueberry syrup, fresh lemon juice and raspberry puree mix, as well as the Jamaica Mistaica, a French almond flavored rum based drink with hints of fresh lime juice and dry orange liqueur.  Under the direction of the resort’s executive chef, Andres Teran, JWB features a menu as dynamic and refreshing as the restaurant’s design and mixology.  One of the most unique aspects of the restaurant is its fresh spear-caught fishing program, which was created by the Margaritaville brand’s concept chef, Carlo Sernaglia.  Each evening, the JWB “Fresh Spear-Caught Fish Special” changes, with details on the day’s fresh catch and the name of the local South Florida fisherman who caught it.  Those who indulge will not only enjoy the freshest, highest-quality fish possible, but they will also help support South Florida’s ecological systems, as spear fishing is less damaging to the environment than line or net fishing.  JWB’s fresh spear-caught fish special will depend on the weather of the day and the success of the restaurant’s fishing partners.
In addition, JWB features a raw bar with an incredible array of fresh options.  Starters include Crab Cakes, Fried Oysters, Calamari and Steak Tartare, among other delicious options.  Entrees menu include Prime Bone-in Ribeye, Colorado Lamb Chops, Whole Grilled Lobster and Paella Del Mar.  Grilled salmon, grouper, seabass and snapper are available each day.  Table sides range from Mac n’ Cheese to Crispy Brussels Sprouts, and unforgettable desserts like the shareable Bananas Foster Cream Pie are the perfect way to close out the night.
“We had an incredibly fun time designing the JWB menu, experimenting with the most popular South Florida flavor profiles, utilizing the freshest possible local ingredients, and adding our own inventive twists here and there,” said Teran.  “The result has already been very well received.  JWB is unlike any other restaurant you can find in South Florida right now, and we look forward to an exciting future ahead.”

JWB Prime Steak and Seafood is located at 1111 North Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL.  The bar opens daily at 4 p.m. and the restaurant serves dinner Sunday to Thursday, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 6 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Even if our visit may have been provided by various travel suppliers for the purposes of reviewing and writing about them, our opinions are not swayed negatively or positively. Our policy: We sometimes are invited to review a venue. We choose to only write positive articles. If you read one of our articles, you know that we had a positive experience. If we have a negative experience, we simply choose not to write anything about that venue. Our tastes may not be your tastes. We want to focus on the positives in life.
