100 Years of Men in Love - The Accidental Collection movie review by Steven Skelley
100 Years of Men in Love - The Accidental Collection movie review by Steven Skelley
100 Years of Men in Love: The Accidental Collection is a documentary focusing on a private collection of vintage photographs of male pairs from the 1850s to the 1950s. When the film truly identifies gay lovers, it is a touching reminder that being gay is both natural and a part of history that’s been hidden for far too long.
Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell narrate while they hypothesize that the pairs of males featured in these photos discovered in thrift and antique stores, flea markets, shoe boxes, family archives, estate sales and old suitcases are lovers. Directed by Emmy-Winning actor-producer David Millbern, the cinematography is exquisite in every way and is the strongest asset of this film.
The film could use more input from professionals in addition to the conjecture of Nini and Treadwell. Why not have a historian explain each era, or a psychologist explain body language, or a photographer explain posing techniques, or a photographic historian share how these poses were or were not normal for that particular era?
Regardless of whether the photos depict gay lovers, best friends, military pals, or family relationships, they really touched my heart. There is something deeply moving and beautiful about love shared openly between two men. The photos alone make this film worth viewing.
