Sugardaddy’s Sumptuous Sweeties
Columbus, Ohio
Named "Best of the Best" by Food Network and crowned winners of Throwdown with Bobby Flay
by Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong
There are people that can think outside the box and see a sales market no one else sees. Life partners and entrepreneurs Mark Ballard and Tom Finney are two of those uniquely visionary people and their Sugardaddy’s Sumptuous Sweeties in Columbus, Ohio is the proof.
Who else would have the nerve to believe that a restaurant serving brownies, blondies and champagne would be a hit in downtown Columbus, Ohio? Who else, besides these two, could have forseen Sugardaddy's being named "Best of the Best" by Food Network or crowned winners of Throwdown with Bobby Flay or appearing on such shows as Ellen, The Rachael Ray Show, and Queer Eye For The Straight Guy?
"I worked for some upscale clothing retailers. Tom worked in marketing too and one day he said Why don't we use our marketing skills for our brownies and blondies? No one else was really doing it. Why not try it in an outside-the-box way?" Mark shared as we sampled their delicious creations. "Tom and I wanted to do something together. In many ways, Sugardaddy's has strengthened our relationship."
"I've always loved to bake. For me, the way to relax was to bake,” Tom continues. “I'm the operational side. Mark is the marketing side."
Sugardaddy’s launched in 2005 and quickly became such a hit that there are now three retail stores and a thriving online store. “"We opened three retail stores in Columbus,” Mark explains. “At first, we were all about mail order. Sales are robust. Our phone number is 1 884 I Want One - because everybody wants a Sugardaddy!"
Both Mark and Tom seem to beam with pride and joy when speaking of their business. Their easy-going manner continues as they introduce their chef Mark Harkins. “We are equal opportunity," Mark shares with a grin. “We let our chef in even though he is straight!"
Mark wants customers to know that quality will always be a priority at Sugardaddy’s. "We keep it fresh - premium ingredients and freshly baked and served to our customers every day. That's our premise and our promise and what we are all about."

Columbus, Ohio is a very GLBT friendly city. The Short North arts district is filled with restaurants, galleries and clubs. We enjoyed every minute of our visit and look forward to returning. The district is very gay-friendly and many of the establishments are gay-owned. Bars and clubs include Havana, Axis, Union Cafe and Level. A Gay and Lesbian theater festival is held every September in the Short North district.
