Starland Community – campground/retreat center located in a Southern California high desert setting near Joshua Tree
By Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong
We asked Mohabee Serrano - Info Guru and Volunteer Resident Administrator - to tell us about the Starland Community campground/retreat center located in a Southern California high desert setting near Joshua Tree National Park.
How would you describe Starland Community in one sentence?
A place to relax, a place to find spiritual and natural healing and health, in a rural desert environment.
Why is nudism / naturism an important and healthy choice?
For many of us, it's really not about having no clothing on. It's about the feeling of freedom, and a feeling of just "being" in a way that is inoffensive, and quite natural.
What is special about your Starland Community?
It's location - we're surrounded by natural "naked" mountains, in a rural setting. One navigates dirt roads to get here. We have the basic splendors of life, to offer. Those who come often are delighted that we aren't too far from "civilization," but it's a retreat away from city life.
Why is Starland Community LGBTQ+ welcoming?
Our founders, our residents, our volunteer staff, and most of our members are all bi or gay, mostly male.
We wanted to create a space and environment for the hikers, the nature-lovers, outdoors people, and the artists, as well as "weekend warriors," something that is missing from gay travel - much of what we've encountered in gay destinations is wonderful, but how about catering to someone who doesn't need sweet candy on a pillow?
Our plan has evolved from simple tent camping to building small cabins, to building the modest group structure, our Main Hall.
We don't have "forms" for filling out on our website--one simply communicates with us, and we accept reservations via email and by phone.
What plans do you have for the future?
We want to include RV'ers, so we built and just opened our RV Sites.
We'll continue to build new and wonderful cabins and places for our guests to enjoy.
Our old Common House needs renovation and a designer to offer new ideas. We're always a "work in progress."
Our website has basic info: www.starlandcommunity.org.
Our facebook page has the current events, schedules, and other info: http://www.facebook.com/StarlandCommunity.
Email us: mailto:[email protected].
Phone: 760-364-2069.
We provide our driving directions with the address, upon receipt of a reservation.
