Sunken Roads: Three Generations After D-Day movie review by Steven Skelley
Maya Soetoro-Ng said, "Slow down and think about the lessons of the elders." We often are too overloaded with the tyranny of the present to take the time and make the effort to glean the wisdom of those who have walked this planet before us and have lived history that will never be repeated. Charlotte Juergens's new documentary Sunken Roads: Three Generations After D-Day is an epiphany of the memory treasures that have been stored for ninety years in the minds of the soldiers that experienced the D-Day invasion that marked the beginning of the end of the Nazi reign of terror in Europe.
Juergens original plan was to research and document the World War II experiences of a family member but soon found herself immersed in a commemorative pilgrimage to Omaha Beach for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Don McCarthy and seven other D-Day veterans soon adopt twenty year old Juergens as their granddaughter. They share intimate memories of the day that they watched eighty-five out of every one hundred fellow soldiers die before their very eyes. These regular, every day men accomplished the impossible and changed the trajectory of history.
Sunken Roads: Three Generations After D-Day is a beautiful memorial documenting the beauty and strength of the human spirit and the priceless memories stored in the minds of our elders.
Sunken Roads: Three Generations After D-Day is directed by Charlotte Juergens. The film is 94 minutes, color, 2019, English & French w/English subtitles. It is now streaming on Apple TV, iTunes, Amazon & Vimeo On Demand plus DVD and Blu ray.
