The Big Coconut Guesthouse
The friendly clothing optional gay men's guesthouse By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong The Big Coconut Guesthouse in Fort Lauderdale is now high on our list of favorite places to stay. The accommodations are excellent, the grounds are beautifully tropical and the whole atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. From the courtyard seating to the complimentary Happy Hour to the crystal clear swimming pool to the complimentary Continental Breakfast, everything is designed to encourage guests to get to know each other and become family. |
We spoke with owner David Medici and asked him to tell us more.
How would you describe The Big Coconut Guesthouse in one sentence?
One of the most welcoming guesthouses in Fort Lauderdale where all guests are treated like they are part of a family.
What is the history of The Big Coconut Guesthouse?
I owned another men's guesthouse called Coconut Cove. There was a void created after the closing of the Coconut Cove that has been filled with the opening of The Big Coconut. Many of the guests that had stayed at the Coconut Cove have already visited and many more are making plans to stay at the Big Coconut.
What is special about The Big Coconut Guesthouse?
The Staff goes out of the way to create a friendly comfortable atmosphere where all guests are made to feel welcome. Whether you are staying a single night or an extended stay you are treated with the same hospitality.
The staff is extremely knowledgeable about local restaurants, nightlife and shopping experiences and will point you in the right direction.
I designed our courtyard to encourage socializing. We have big tables under umbrellas where guys can sit, talk, enjoy a drink and get to know each other. Our guests quickly become friends even though they are from different backgrounds and different parts of the country or the world.
During the morning breakfast or the weekend happy hour many guests get to know one another and become life long friends. You can’t make a trip without running into someone you met before or making new friends that make your stay more enjoyable.

We also have a complimentary Happy Hour where we set up a poolside bar. Our guests can have a drink or two or three and spend an hour getting to know each other.
Guys spend a lot of time in the clothing optional pool talking to each other too.
What accommodations are available at The Big Coconut Guesthouse?
There are rooms that have a King size bed with full kitchens or just a wet bar. Additional rooms have two Queen beds with a wet bar.
There is also a Penthouse apartment which is a one bedroom apartment with central air that has a private balcony overlooking the pool.
Who stays at The Big Coconut Guesthouse?
The guests tend to be more from the bear community but still has a nice mix of an older and younger crowd where all guests intermingle instead of the breaking off into cliques that tends to happen at other resorts.
Our Thoughts
The Big Coconut Guesthouse in Fort Lauderdale is now one of our favorite places to stay. Everything about this resort is done with care. Owner David Medici obviously loves doing what he does and it shows. He has created a beautiful guesthouse where gay men can be as nude as they want to be and accepted as family by all. Bravo, David!
