Happy Pride From A Former Homophobia Hostage By Christen Christensen
Early tomorrow morning will mark the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall riots. If you haven't yet, read up on it. It started the championing of LGBTQ rights in the USA, but the affects were felt worldwide.
I didn't know anything about this event until twelve years ago, while I held myself hostage in a belief system that had/has no place for me. One cannot imagine the immense struggle that took place daily in my being and soul. My internal homophobia almost killed me a few times.
Yes, I still have remnants of that killer inside. We all do for various reasons.
I need to learn to more readily accept my experiences for good or ill. Reflecting on these experiences and events that have brought me to this point help me, but are filled with extreme emotion, anger and resolve. I need to do more to promote acceptance, love and hope within myself and in others.
Happy pride everyone. I am a fag. I personally own that word. I was called that hundreds of times growing up. I'm not afraid if it anymore. I celebrate it. I belong.
I can give and receive love in the way I feel completes me. I won't apologize to anyone's belief system that has no room for my new found family. Biology wins over discrimination.
I can marry now, I can be safe in my job, my spouse can receive federal, state and medical benefits with me. All these "rights" have been allotted to me and my family in the last decade.
Fifty-one years ago, an event happened, and we are JUST getting the same rights as my biological family. That's a LONG DAMN time!
There are still things that need to happen to have all the same rights. These equal rights shouldn't even be a question. But it's because of those antiquated beliefs that people have that seem to blur the lines,. It's sad.... but it's our reality.
Happy pride month fellow fags and LGBTQ family.
Love you all!
