Gay Homestays
Matching travelers with LGBTQ property owners
By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong
Gay Homestays was established in 2010 to provide safe and welcoming travel accommodation to the LGBTQ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer). This gay owned and operated company offers an online community marketplace for people to list, browse, discover and book gay accommodation around the world.
Their website says, “We match travelers, in need of affordable accommodation, with LGBTQ property owners with spare rooms to rent and this makes for a unique traveling experience based on cross cultural exchange, learning and friendship. Our hosts are enriched by opportunities of meeting people from all over the world and our customers benefit from being able to participate in the local life of the places they visit, in an authentic gay-friendly environment.”
We interviewed Choon, the Gay Homestays Team Social Media Officer. This is what he told us about Gay Homestays.
In one sentence, describe Gay Homestays:
Gay Homestays is a place where members of the LGBT community can stay with like-minded people in their own homes when travelling as a friendlier and affordable alternative to hotels.
How does Gay Homestays work?
Hosts can sign up to Gay Homestays for free and simply upload their details to start making extra cash and meet new people travelling to their hometown. Guests can make bookings through the website by easily searching for and selecting the accommodation that appeals to them most.
Who uses Gay Homestays?
Gay Homestays is used by a variety of people of different ages, sexualities and genders from the LGBT community, many of whom prefer more intimate alternatives to hotels. Most travel for business or leisure purposes and moreso during popular local events, particularly Pride.
What are the advantages to using Gay Homestays?
The advantages of using Gay Homestays are that guests can meet friendly, helpful hosts who open up their homes to them and introduce them to their hometowns. Gay Homestays is also typically more affordable than B&Bs and hotels and it also allows hosts to earn some extra income. Sometimes our hosts and guests have struck up friendships and guests will sometimes even rebook and return to the same host.
