Gotham Knights NYC Gay Rugby Team 2020 Calendar
GOTHAM KNIGHTS NYC GAY RUGBY TEAM 2020 CALENDAR
The Gotham Knights Rugby Football Club announces the official launch of their 2020 Calendar at an event hosted by the club at Industry Bar in Hell’s Kitchen on November 20th, 2019.
The event forms part of their annual fundraising activities building up towards the bi-annual Bingham Cup, to be hosted in Ottawa, Canada in the summer of 2020. The tournament is named after American hero and LGBTQ icon, Mark Bingham who tragically lost his life in overthrowing the terrorists on United Airlines Flight 93. At the time, Mark Bingham and local rugby player Scott Glaessgen were planning to found a rugby team in New York City, the Gotham Knights Rugby Football Club being the product of those efforts. “When we set out to bring back the Gotham Calendar, we didn’t just want to bring back scantily clad men with carefully placed rugby memorabilia” says Wilco Froneman, the creative director of the Gotham Knights 2020 Calendar. “We wanted this calendar to be representative of the great heritage of this club, whilst also being provocative enough to lure a wide variety of interest”. And that it definitely did, with pre-sale orders coming in from all over the US and some unexpected international locations, such as Norway.
The calendar is definitely not your traditional one-size-fits-all representation gay culture and most certainly exceed expectations, packing loads of charisma. “While we aimed to show the beautifully diverse body types of our boys, we also were able to showcase the teams incredible personality” says a very proud club president Alex Ghinger. “The personality of our players is vital to our success and culture and I couldn’t be more proud of what Wilco and the team accomplished.”
The images come from the talented eyes of the wonderful photographer Mike Esperanza. “It was such a blast working with Gotham Knights Rugby team on executing each shot. Each concept had a life of its own while keeping the continuity of the brand,” Said the photographer, he also hopes the audience will fall in love with the final product, just like he did.
The calendar launch party will be held at Industry Bar in Hell’s Kitchen, starting with a happy hour between 7-8pm, followed by some live performances by club members, calendar sales and an opportunity to meet the calendar models, rugby players and the greater Gotham Knights rugby team.

About Gotham Knights Rugby Football Club (RFC)
The Gotham Knights Rugby Football Club is the premier gay/inclusive rugby team in New York City. Following in the tradition of International Gay Rugby (IGR) teams like the London Kings Cross Steelers (1995), San Francisco Fog RFC (2000) and the Washington Renegades (2000), part-time New York City business owner and Fog player, Mark Bingham and, local rugby player, Scott Glaessgen planned to found a team in New York. Their plans were cut short on September 11, 2001, when Bingham was lost in the terrorist attack on United Airlines Flight 93. Inspired by Bingham’s life, work, and dedication to the sport of rugby, Glaessgen and other New York City rugby players established the Gotham Knights RFC in late 2001. Currently, we are a D-III and D-IV men’s rugby club in the Empire Rugby Football Union Geographical Union of New York and a member of IGR. Our mission of inclusion is to increase diversity within the sport of rugby by the recruitment of LGBTQ and underrepresented groups, refute negative stereotypes of the LGBTQ athletic community, and to create a competitive team on local and national levels.
