Let me begin by revealing that I am a Beatles music fan. Calling their eclectic, genre busting music the soundtrack of my life is corny but a valid description. I've attended a Ringo Starr And His All Starr Band concert and loved it! Full disclosure - If I ever get a ticket to see a Paul McCartney concert, there is a fair chance I may pee my pants. When the movie YESTERDAY opened on June 28, I went online and ordered tickets to the first showing.
Jack Malik has left his job as a school teacher to pursue his dream of being a singer / songwriter. Things are not going well. Other than his manager Ellie who obviously adores the oblivious Jack, no one is interested in his music. Jack is ready to give up music forever when he is hit by a bus and awakes to an alternate reality where no one has ever heard a Beatles song. When Jack pretends to write every hit Beatle song, he becomes world famous.
Jack gets to be the music star he always dreamed of being but deep inside he knows he is living a lie - the songs aren't really his. He gains a famous narcisisstic manager portrayed masterfully by the hilarious Kate McKinnon and earns the envy of pop megastar Ed Sheeran but loses the love of his life.
YESTERDAY wraps up the story with a feel-good, happy ending just right for a date movie night but the real highlight is the amazing catalog of Beatles classics even if they are misquoted in Jack's versions. Hearing these legendary lyrical masterpieces again is well worth the price of admission alone.
P.S. Paul McCartney, if you read this, I need two tickets to your concert!
