Cozumel Cruise Excursions - Cozumel, Mexico
Add a little adventure to your Cozumel vacation
by Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong
Cozumel is a beautiful island off the Eastern coast Mexico. How special is this island? Celebrities like Bill Gates and tennis star Rafael Nadal vacation here every year. If Cozumel is a stop on your upcoming cruise and you want to add a little adventure to your visit, book an excursion with Cozumel Cruise Excursions. Our laugh-filled scenic Jeep Tour was one of the highlights of our travel year!
We booked our tour online about a month prior to our visit. The Cozumel Cruise Excursions website is easy to navigate and every excursion option is very well described. When you find a tour that fits your needs, a Reservations page allows you to book the tour and pay safely and securely through Paypal even if you don't have a Paypal account.
After booking our tour online, we were contacted through email by Cozumel Cruise Excursions owner John Adams. Mr. Adams gave us clear instructions on how to get to the tour starting point from the cruise port and told us to contact him at any time with any questions. He provided us with his email address and phone number.
Adams explains the philosophy of Cozumel Cruise Excursions on their website, "We are a family owned tour operator who live locally in Cozumel. Our family owns and operates our small group & private tours that are not available anywhere else. Our tours provide much more for less. We allow our reviews and reputation do the advertising for us. We build great relationships with our guests, and believe its important to understand what our guests are looking for when taking a tour or excursion in Cozumel. We provide our guests with a unique and personalized experience that suites their interests. We want to be the highlight of your vacation! We also do it for our love for Cozumel. We believe Cozumel is the most magnificent Island in the Caribbean."
When our ship arrived at Cozumel, we followed Adams directions out of the port and had a short walk to our meeting point. Several Cozumel Cruise Excursions employees were there waiting for us. Within minutes of our arrival, our guide Jorge was leading us to our Jeep to start our Cozumel Jeep Adventure.
Because of very high waves that day, the Cozumel authorities had banned snorkeling for safety reasons. Though we were disappointed that we would not be able to snorkel on our tour, Jorge assured us that he would find plenty of other opportunities for a Cozumel adventure.
Jorge was both courteous and entertaining. He is bilingual but also shared a lot of laughs with one of our group who speaks fluent Spanish.
Most other Jeep tours offered elsewhere on Cozumel consisted of a large group of tourists driving one after the other in a caravan to each destination. One of the advantages to our Custom Jeep Tour was that it was just us and Jorge. We would go wherever we wanted and stay for as long or as little as we wanted. This is a great advantage for sightseeing.
Normally the Custom Jeep Tour includes a visit to the Private Cozumel beach club where guests "are not overcrowded by cruise passengers." The beach club has a pool, showers, lockers, restuarant, bar, beach massage and snorkeling. Even though there is a snorkel tour available at the club, your Cozumel Cruise Excursions private guide will take you on your own private snorkel tour.
Jorge guided us to Punta Sur Park and Beach - one of our most popular Cozumel attractions- located on the southern tip of the island. Whether your are a swimmer, snorkeler or a photographer, you will love Punta Sur and its' reefs, beaches, and lagoons. It is simply beautiful in every way.
We also visited the historic Celarain lighthouse and museum. Be sure to climb the 134 steps to the top for stunning beach views. This is a great place for a keepsake photo as you stand beneath the signs pointing to cities around the world.
We made another scenic stop at Laguna de Colombia which is part of a three-lagoon system and a crocodile habitat. There is a rustic boardwalk that stretches into the lagoon and leads to a two-story lookout tower that you will definitely want to climb for the views and the refreshing breeze.
Just beyond the Laguna de Colombia, there is a small but interesting Mayan ruin named El Caracol that was built between 1200 and 1400 A.D. Jorge explained the history and the Mayan use of the site.
Our tour continued with a drive to the east side of the island of Cozumel where we enjoyed "seven miles of secluded oceanfront and beachfront that has magnificent Cozumel beaches called the wild side which is the east coast of Cozumel Island Mexico - white sand beaches, blow holes, mesmerizing rock formations, caves, secret beaches, off-road paths and much more."
Our next stop was for an authentic Mexican lunch at La Palapa de San Martin Restaurant and Bar. The open-air restaurant and bar is located on the second floor of a thatch-roof building with excellent beach views. As part of our tour package, we were fed chips, salsa and chicken fajitas. Our drinks were an additional cost. To make things even more enjoyable, three musicians roamed the dining room and played songs for diners.
After a visit to another small Mayan temple, we stopped for a tour of the Los Tres Tonos Tequila factory. A guide took us through the factory and explained the process of manufacturing "all-natural" tequila. He boasted that their tequila would not give drinkers a hangover and even had an effect better than Viagra! We enjoyed a variety of free tequila samples during our tour.
Jorge returned us back to our ship with two hours to spare before leaving port so we had plenty of time to shop in the port souvenir stores.
