Article by Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong
Space - the final frontier. Just about every science fiction lover knows those words from the beloved opening of the original Star Trek television series. Fans have supported a variety of television spin-offs and feature films that have grossed over a billion dollars. In 2017, Trekkies will be able to finally board a vessel with their favorite Star Trek cast members including the original Captain Kirk - William Shatner.
Though it is not the iconic starship USS Enterprise, Star Trek fans and cast members will board the beautiful Norwegian Pearl cruise ship together for a Caribbean adventure.
The website and press releases state that the January 9 to 15, 2017 sailing will "boldly go where no one has gone before" and will let guests "engage on the most fascinating adventure at sea ever presented."
This is how they describe the experience:
Star Trek: The Cruise will offer 6 days and 6 nights of unique experiences including dramatic performances, comedy shows and concerts by Star Trek actors; intimate speaking engagements with leading scientists, influencers and experts; themed parties, nightclubs, bars, casinos and private islands; interactive games, screenings, competitions and so much more!
Star Trek: The Cruise is dedicated to bringing Star Trek fans the most original and immersive interactivity ever produced! We are pleased to announce that more world-class talent have signed up to sail with us in January 2017. Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Robert Picardo from Star Trek: Voyager, James Darren from Deep Space Nine, Denise Crosby from The Next Generation plus John de Lancie from TNG, Voyager and Deep Space Nine will all be part of our inaugural journey.
Star Trek: The Cruise will be setting sail on the beautiful Norwegian Pearl, an NCL Jewel Class Cruise ship that has been outfitted exclusively for charter cruise programs such as ours. When you are not experiencing the amazing activities of Star Trek: The Cruise , we invite you to experience the wonders of sailing on the Norwegian Pearl. Her chic bowling alley, 16 delicious dining options, 13 bars and lounges, dazzling casino, tranquil spa, and spacious Garden Villas are just a few things that make this ship a destination of her own.
Ports of call:
Miami
Our departure port, Miami, has an amazing array of cultures and flashy urban settings, which makes it a scene to be seen. Before we set sail on Star Trek: The Cruise and go where no one has gone before, there is much to explore with the trendy Art Deco district of South Beach, Calle Ocho in Little Havana, the super-upscale neighborhoods of Coconut Grove and Coral Gables. For the daring and fearless, take a trip on the unique ecosystem of the Everglades and the airboat adventure, where prehistoric creatures like alligators and crocodiles lurk along ‘The River Of Grass’. The perfect start before stepping aboard our own “Starship” adventure at sea.
Cozumel
As our “Starship” arrives at the island of Cozumel, just off the coast of the Mexican mainland, there are an abundance of adventures and mysteries to discover. Although known for its fantastic fishing, snorkeling and diving opportunities, it is here that you can also explore centuries of human splendor in the Mayan ruins at Tulum, spectacularly sited on the sea cliffs. If you want to stay downtown, then shopping is a highlight as well as the eateries and bars where the festivities come to life! But there is more, knowing most of you have an inquisitive mind, there is more to unearth on this island… Take a Dune Buggy around the entire island, go Zip-lining high above the trees, Swim with Dolphins or even explore an amazing series of caverns connected by underground waterways in the jungle. Some planets in outer space don’t have this much to offer!
Nassau
Like Space, Nassau has a long history with many mysteries to uncover! The town can be traced back to days of the legendary Pirate Blackbeard. With a sheltered harbor, the mansions, cathedrals and 18th-century fortresses –all have been beautifully preserved, while holding many secrets.Explore the lost civilization at the Atlantis Paradise Resort and the one-of-a-kind Aquapark plus try your luck in the Casino while you’re there. With an array of adventures, you can visit Blue Lagoon Island – a relaxing 20-minute sail from Nassau. Blue Lagoon Island has several programs that allow visitors to interact with dolphins. Cable Beach is also home to the Crystal Palace Casino, as well as several luxury resorts, nightclubs and the Cable Beach golf course…whatever you desire, your stay in Nassau will be a memorable one.
Great Stirrup Cay
When our “Starship” arrives exclusively on our very own “Planet At Sea” otherwise known to the rest of the universe as NCL’s Private Island of Great Stirrup Cay, we’ll spend a full day on the expanded white sandy beaches and enjoy the many activities we have to offer. Swim with Sting-Rays, take a wave runner adventure to the neighboring islands or enjoy a skyward view from a Parasail plus much, much more! The fun is endless here. Hungry? Grab a bite at our the 8,500-square foot beach buffet which includes a central pizza making station, two grills, hot and cold food stations, as well as fresh fruits and breads. And as we have the “Planet” all to ourselves, we will create adventures and events on the beach, taken right out of a Star Trek universe!
