The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club
Naples, Florida
Where Historic Charm Meets Modern Comfort
by Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong
The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, in the heart old “Old Naples,” stretches impressively from the Tamiami Trail all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Its’ 125 acres accommodate a beautiful white-sandy beach, more than 300 guest rooms and suites, a championship golf course, an award winning tennis facility, a fitness center, a luxury day spa, a beachside bar, four restaurants, two beachfront pools, two whirlpools, a poolside bar and grill and a complimentary Beach Club for your kids!
The hotel has quite a history. Its’ origins can be traced to the 1880’s. The golf course was originally built in the 1930’s by a family associated with the Jergen’s hand lotion fortune. In 1946, Henry Broadwell Watkins Sr., a 56-year old retired toy manufacturer from Ohio, purchased the property and it has remained in his family ever since. His grandsons Michael Watkins and Henry Watkins III invested more than $50 million updating and renovating the historic facilities.
The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club boasts six residential beachfront buildings which include 255 guest rooms, 42 suites, and 20 efficiencies. Every room and suite features fresh tropical décor, plush soft goods, comfortable furnishings and new flat-screen televisions. As part of the recent remodeling, bathrooms were enlarged with new showers, double sinks, vanities and fixtures.
There are four restaurants on site in addition to The Sunset Beach Bar which was labeled the “Best Beachfront Bar” by the Travel Channel. HB’s On The Gulf is Naples' only beachfront restaurant. It specializes in “regional seafood and great steaks.” Our lunches of cooked shrimp and specialty salads were incredible. The Everglades serves “a la carte and full breakfast buffets daily.” The Poolside Bar offers “tropical drinks, premium wines by the glass and a fine selection of beers from around the world.” Their All Day Menu includes “sushi, salads, hamburger, hot dogs, snacks, soft serve ice cream and more.” Broadwell’s Restaurant is currently undergoing remodeling.
If you are a golfer, you’ll definitely enjoy this historic course. This par 72 golf course was built in the late 1920’s, is the oldest course in the Naples community and covers 6,488 yards. Practice facilities include a warm-up range, a short game area, and a 14,500 square foot putting green. A beautiful new full-service pro shop and locker room facilities, golf lessons and even golf club rentals are available.
Tennis players can enjoy six Har-Tru courts at the award-winning Mary C. Watkins Tennis Center which offers private lessons and clinics for both adults and juniors. In the Fall and Winter, the tennis center offers adult clinics, private tennis lessons for men and women, mixed doubles, round robins, junior clinics and tennis games arranged for all levels. Complete pro shop services are available.
Unlike many upscale resorts that charge numerous, costly additional fees, The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club guests benefit from complimentary self and valet parking, no resort fees, and complimentary fitness center admission.
The resort highlights local artists by purchasing and displaying their creations and it strives to be a leader in community conservation as a certified participant in Florida’s Green Lodging Program, awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The core requirements of the green lodge program include water conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and clean air processes. The beautiful orchids that adorn the grounds and buildings are grown on-site in their own greenhouse.
Our stay in one of the cool, beachside cabanas was comfortable and relaxing. Just steps from the white-sand beach and a view of the historic Naples' Pier, the toughest decisions we had were whether to snooze under the shade of a palm tree, go for a swim in the warm, blue Gulf, stroll down the scenic beach to the pier, or lounge on a chaise by one of the pools!
The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club is a Naples, Florida landmark with modern amenities, the perfect location and a variety of assets few resorts in Florida can match. We could stay here again and again!
