DON’T YOU DARE by Gayla Turner - Book Review by Steven Skelley
DON’T YOU DARE by Gayla Turner
Book Review by Steven Skelley
As the recent news of a Florida class valedictorian being threatened if he mentioned the word gay at graduation and of the passing and implementation of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, DON’T YOU DARE by Gayla Turner could not be more timely. It is a heart-rending, true love story about what really happens when homophobia is the law of the land.
Author Gayla Turner discovers a hidden box of her grandmother’s most cherished photos. To her absolute amazement, Grandma Ruby is pictured being married to another woman instead of Grandpa. Like a detective gleaning the fields of history, Turner searches to know her grandmother. Through other cherished photos and yellowing newspaper clippings, she discovers that her grandmother was a member of a secret group of LGBTQ+ women that feared for their lives.

Gayla Turner does a masterful job of telling a story. Her documentation of the politics behind homophobic legislation and practices is both phenomenal and horrifying. How soon we have forgotten that LGBTQ+ Americans could be placed in a mental institution legally for simply existing. The newspaper story of a young lesbian being kidnapped, stripped and then having boiling hot tar poured on her groin broke my heart.
I think DON’T YOU DARE by Gayla Turner should be listed as required reading for every LGBTQ+ book club and every U.S. politician.
