MajorPride will be the first Pride event in Llantwit Major, the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, UK. We asked organizer Rhodri Ellis Owen to tell us all about it.
How would you describe MajorPride in one sentence?
MajorPride is a small town Pride within a big hearted rural community
What is special about MajorPride?
MajorPride is a first. The first Pride event in Llantwit Major, a small historic coastal town in South Wales, UK, and the first in the county, the Vale of Glamorgan. It will be held on Saturday, 1st September 2018 and while it is not intended to compete with larger big city Pride events, it will be a celebration of the diversity of this local community, reflecting its quirkiness and will have a more organic feel as a result.
Why is it important to host MajorPride in Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales?
For anybody who was brought up in a small rural town or find themselves living or working in such an environment, you might understandably feel a need to escape to the bright lights of the big city to be your true self. MajorPride is about celebrating the local and challenging the perception that you can’t be you in a smaller community or that a smaller community can’t be welcoming, friendly and accepting.
As someone who moved here only 18 months ago I can vouch for Llantwit Major’s open attitude and wanted to find some way to bottle that and hence MajorPride was born.
What activities and special events are planned at MajorPride?
We will be having events which befit the nature of this small community. Local businesses are competing for the best Pride window display while we will also have a dog show and a classic car display.
There will be dancers and choirs in the streets as well as a wellness zone in the church with reflexologists, Pilates instructors, masseurs and mindfulness practitioners.
The local rugby team, Llantwit Major Rugby Club will be wearing rainbow laces for their first match of the season that day as will the local running club - Major Milers - in the Llantwit Major 10k the week before MajorPride.
We have some great pubs in the town and the historic White Hart will be renamed as the Rainbow Hart for the day and host live music and a BBQ.
There will also be a disco and drag act in the evening in the Tudor Tavern.
How would you describe the gay community in Wales?
The gay community in Wales may be small and more spread out compared to other UK hotspots such as Brighton, Manchester or London but there is a thriving gay community here and no shortage of gay bars and nightclubs in the bigger cities of Cardiff and Swansea - all easily accessible from Llantwit Major by public transport, car or taxi.
However you don’t need to escape to the cities as the Llantwit Major shops pubs and restaurants are friendly and interesting places to hang out.
