The Whistler Pride and Ski Festival has celebrated diversity for over 25 years with gay men and women from 26 nations. Whistler, British Columbia, Canada is 2000 feet above sea level with peaks at 7,250 feet and annual snowfall of 33 feet making it a prized skiing destination. Some people say Whistler Pride may be the friendliest on the planet.
We asked the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival CEO and Executive Producer Dean Nelson to tell us about it.
In one sentence, what is Whistler Pride?
Whistler Pride and Ski Festival is a celebration of Sports, Culture and LGBT Human Rights.
Why is this event important to LGBTQ (and all) citizens?
Whistler Pride and Ski Festival is a destination pride where many of our guests are coming in from all regions around the world. Some of our guests are coming from places where being gay is a criminal offence and this is one of the weeks in their year that they can come to a safe destination and be themselves.
Whistler Pride combines both sports, culture, entertainment and some Human Rights in the annual festival.
Whistler Pride was the producer of the first ever Pride House at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and we continue to champion and create visibility for LGBT Human Rights in both sports and in general.
What is the goal of Whistler Pride?
The goal of Whistler Pride and Ski Festival is to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone regardless of where they identify on the spectrum of sexuality and gender / gender identity to come together and celebrate love and togetherness.
We use sports, culture, entertainment and LGBT Human Rights as our vehicle in creating awareness and discussions on LGBT rights and visibility.
When and where is Whistler Pride?
Whistler Pride and Ski Festival is an annual event the last week of January in the stunning and inclusive mountain resort of Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.
Our next festival will be January 21-28, 2018.
