Tab Hunter Confidential Documentary Debuts on DVD and Blu-Ray
It’s honest, entertaining, engaging and spicy!
Review by Frank Ioele
Great news…Tab Hunter is alive and well at the age of 85 and just released a wonderfully honest documentary entitled, “Tab Hunter Confidential”. It is based on the autobiography of the same name which was published last year.
Vanity Fair calls it “slick, savvy, rollicking and eye-popping”.
I say it’s honest, entertaining, engaging and spicy!
The famous actor/singer of the 50’s and 60’s still looks great and is living in California with his partner of over 30 years, Allan Glaser.
Hollywood’s all American boy comes across as very focused and open as he tells stories about his early life as Art Galien (born Arthur Kelm).
His mother left his father who was abusive and Art only glimpsed his father one more time when he was about 16 years old through an open door that was slammed in his face.
His love of horses and ice skating brings us through his first sexual encounter with a man and his first relationships.
Tab laughs at his first attempts at acting in films such as “Island of Desire” costarring Linda Darnell who liked the way he kissed and “Return To Treasure Island” whose director, E. A. Dupont said it was the worst film he had ever directed in his entire career.
Getting serious about acting, his breakout film, “Battle Cry” led to his contract at Warner Brothers where he stayed under the studio’s protective arm until 1961 when he bought out the remainder of his contract from Jack Warner for $100,000!
Unfortunately, career oblivion followed when Warner brought in Troy Donahue to replace him as the public’s new all American boy.
The documentary is filled with interviews from costars and friends such as Debbie Reynolds, Terry Moore, Robert Wagner, John Waters, George Takei, Clint Eastwood, Portia De Rossi and French actress, Etchika Choureau whom he almost married!
Mr. Hunter is unflinching throughout but tacitly refuses to give many details about his other life - gay movie star of the repressive 1950’s and ‘60’s.
He names names such as actor, Anthony Perkins and figure skater, Ronnie Robertson with whom he had relationships and gives us some details but makes it very clear that Tab Hunter is a very private person.
Mr. Hunter’s later career experiences come under the heading of “putting food on the table” - B movies and dinner theater appearances which took such a toll on his health that he suffered a heart attack on a ski slope.
The director, John Waters rescued Tab from oblivion in 1981 with the gay, camp classic “Polyester” starring opposite transvestite diva, Divine. The film became a mainstream success and led to a reteaming with Divine in “Lust In the Dust” in 1985 alongside singer, Lainie Kazan.
The documentary runs a very full 90 minutes with film and TV clips illustrating the narrative. It is a highly recommended, well thought out, chronological story of a beloved, gorgeous hunk of a movie star who seems relaxed and very happy with his life.
Don’t miss the story behind his love affair with Natalie Wood, his very successful recording career which forced Jack Warner to create the Warner Brothers records division, his failed TV show as well as 36 minutes of bonus interviews.
You get quite a big bang for your buck - luscious Tab Hunter and over 2 hours of his life available on Blu-ray and DVD.
"Tab Hunter Confidential" is now available on iTunes with exclusive bonus features and also on Amazon Instant, Google Play, Vudu and more.
The Blu-Ray & DVD will be available nationwide at all major retailers, with autographed copies only available on Tab Hunter's official website, www.tabhunter.com.
