Book Review: Ricky Martin ME
By Steven Skelley
All I knew about Ricky Martin a week ago is that he is an exceptionally good looking man, he has a dazzling smile, he is a gay Latino and he has a couple of immensely popular songs. After reading his autobiography, I know that he is all those things but so much more. Ricky Martin is a worldwide star of music, television and theatre who secretly helps people in desperate need while he constantly challenges himself to grow and evolve as a human being.
When Ricky Martin hit it big with his 6 million selling hit song Livin’ La Vida Loca, people in the USA thought he was an overnight sensation. Nothing could be further from the truth. Ricky had toured the world playing to audiences of 50,000 or more from the age of 12! His music earned gold records in multiple countries.
As an actor, he appeared on multiple Spanish language television shows, had a role on the iconic American soap opera General Hospital, and starred on Broadway in Les Miserables.
When Ricky’s album Ricky Martin sold over 20 million copies, it meant that people in the USA were finally recognizing what the rest of the world already knew – that Ricky Martin was something special.
The autobiography Ricky Martin ME lets Ricky walk us through his childhood in Puerto Rico and all the crazy things that came together at just the right times to propel him from one success to another.
It also gives Ricky the opportunity to discuss his decades-long battle to understand and accept his sexuality.
Most importantly for me, Ricky Martin ME reveals how Ricky’s heart was broken when he saw the lives of abused children around the world. Time after time, Ricky flew to the sites of tsunamis, hurricanes or locations of child trafficking to rescue children and even build homes for them.
By the time I finished Ricky Martin ME, I found myself wanting to know this man personally. Ricky Martin is no one-hit-wonder. He is an international superstar who will never stop seeing himself as a little Puerto Rican kid wanting to make people happy.
