THE MONKEY movie review by Steven Skelley
While almost nothing is as horrifying as living through the idiocy of another Trump Presidency, times like these call out for a wonderful distraction like the film THE MONKEY.
THE MONKEY is bloody beautiful!
THE MONKEY is gore galore!
THE MONKEY is splatter spectacular!
THE MONKEY is horror hilarity!
THE MONKEY is just what the doctor ordered…if the doctor was a homicidal toy monkey! <MORE>

DEAR EVAN HANSEN theatre review by Thomas Routzong and Steven Skelley
For two nights, Broadway at the King Center and the American Theatre Guild present the national touring production of DEAR EVAN HANSEN in Melbourne, Florida. We have seen both the film version and the stage production of DEAR EVAN HANSEN and we find them equally disconcerting, insightful and inspiring. How can a story about two suicidal teens do all this? It helps to have fabulous dialogue, realistic characters and emotionally charged music that fully supports the evolution of the characters. <MORE>

Cathedral City LGBTQ+ Days come to the Desert March 8-10, 2024

2/22/2024

Comments

As California’s first Pride event of the year, the 8th annual Cathedral City LGBT Days presented by Agua Caliente Casinos again brings together numerous LGBTQ+ celebrities, artists, performers, media, community leaders, Coachella Valley residents and visitors for an unforgettable weekend of live entertainment, community engagement and fun activities from March 8th-10th, 2024.**

Friday March 8th features the official Pride flag raising and lighting of City Hall beginning at 5:55PM doors open at 6:00PM for a 6:30PM community film screening of Mike Nichols’ classic The Birdcage under the stars at the Cathedral City Community Amphitheater. In the film starring Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane, Dianne Wiest and Calista Flockhart, a gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's right-wing moralistic parents. The Birdcage screening is free to the public; register for film tickets here. Bars throughout Cathedral City will host LGBT Days specials following the screening and all weekend.

Saturday’s festivities include a headline comedy show starring River Butcher taking place at the Agave Caliente Terraza, the outdoor entertainment pavilion at Agua Caliente Casino Cathedral City. Los Angeles-based standup comic, actor, and writer Butcher’s first half-hour special “A Different Kind of Dude” debuted on Comedy Central’s YouTube channel and was called “a masterclass in culture war commentary” by Esquire.com. River recently wrote on the FX pilot “Belated,” previously wrote for “A League of Their Own,” and created/starred in/wrote the critically acclaimed and GLAAD award-nominated tv show “Take My Wife.” He’s also been on screen as non-binary standup comic Lindsay Brady on “Good Trouble,” Adam Conover’s sibling on “Adam Ruins Everything” or queer dinner guest Denim in the hit movie “Friendsgiving.” Butcher’s done standup all over the globe and the screen and was named one of Vanity Fair’s “Ten Comics to Watch” at Montreal’s Just For Laughs/Juste Pour Rire in 2017, just 6 years after doing his first standup open mic. He’s just recorded his first one-hour special in Portland, set to be released on YouTube this year. Get tickets here.
The weekend concludes on Sunday March 10th with the annual Bed Race and Parade of Beds in front of City Hall starting at 10:00AM, where thousands of well-wishers line up to cheer on teams running festively decorated beds down Avenue Lalo Guerrero, competing for prizes and local infamy; admission is free and open to the public. The Bed Race will be emceed by local talent and accompanied by live entertainment. After the Bed Race, Cathedral City LGBT Days will host a noon Champagne Sunday Brunch featuring top DJs, champagne, drink specials, exclusive vendors, and gourmet food trucks on hand for all attendees to close out the weekend in style.

Key West’s Aquaplex to Debut Birdcage Cabaret with Christopher Peterson Show

2/22/2024

Comments

The Aquaplex, located in the heart of Key West’s LGBTQ entertainment district on Duval Street, is to stage the grand opening of its Birdcage Cabaret Friday, March 1, with a lavish new show starring renowned female impersonator Christopher Peterson.

Peterson is to be the permanent headliner at The Birdcage after many years of performing his celebrated EYECONS show at venues in Key West and other cities. His Birdcage performances are to blend his traditional impersonations of famous divas with elaborate new elements - and will also feature a rotating cast of Aquanettes, the complex’s signature drag queens.

With a name inspired by the musical and film “La Cage aux Folles,” The Birdcage was designed to suggest a sophisticated big-city nightclub with a Key West flair. Mike and John Barrett, new owners of the Aquaplex, renovated the space previously called SideBar to feature an enlarged stage with theater curtains, an enhanced sound system, a full bar and cabaret-style tables and chairs.

Located at 504 Angela St. just off Duval Street, The Birdcage can seat 80 to 100 guests depending on table configuration.

Peterson’s new 90-minute cabaret show is to be staged Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Plans call for Drag King shows at 7:30 p.m. every Sunday at the venue.

As well as appearing at The Birdcage, the Aquanettes are to continue presenting their own highly popular shows at Aqua, with performances set for 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 7 and 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

The Birdcage bar is to open at 2 p.m. daily, closing at 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Happy hour prices are to be in effect until showtime, with no cover charge when performances aren’t taking place.

Daytona Beach Double Take - World-class art, creative cuisine and more add reasons to visit this iconic destination

Daytona Beach Double Take - World-class art, creative cuisine and more add reasons to visit this iconic destination

For most people, visions of Daytona Beach, Florida, include iconic east coast beaches and a history of world-famous racing. Those are absolutely two of the best reasons to visit and to come back again and again. But many guests have found there is a surprising list of other activities and a diverse collection of attractions that make this a destination that delights visitors with a wide variety of interests.

Located just an hour east of Orlando, Daytona Beach is midway between St. Augustine and the Kennedy Space Center and is an easy destination to reach by car or air. Interstate 95 and Interstate 4 intersect here and the Daytona Beach International Airport (700 Catalina Drive, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 386-248-8030) has non-stop flights from select cities.

At Daytona Beach’s museums and galleries visitors are treated to world-class art displays as well as collections that celebrate local history and culture. This is home to the Smithsonian-affiliated Museum of Arts & Sciences (352 South Nova Road, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 386-255-0285), considered Central Florida’s premier museum. Here, visitors can experience the beauty of art, the wonder of science and stories of history as well as view an amazing display of Coca-Cola memorabilia. The world’s largest collection of Florida themed art is on display at the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art (352 South Nova Road, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 386-255-0285). Displays include a showcase collection and several rotating exhibits. And Florida's only museum dedicated to photography, the Southeast Museum of Photography (Daytona State College, 1200 West International Speedway Boulevard, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 386-506-3894), features changing exhibits and interpretive displays.

Daytona Beach has a vibrant, walkable downtown and the Beach Street retail area located between Bay Street and Orange Avenue, is a great place to start. Or a walk along the mile-long Riverfront Esplanade (Magnolia Avenue & Beach Street, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114) offers views of the Intracoastal Waterway and the perfect spot for waterfront shopping and dining.

Both sport history and civil rights are celebrated here, too. Jackie Robinson Ballpark (105 East Orange Avenue, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 386-257-3172), the place where Robinson broke the color barrier, is one of the oldest still used in professional baseball and is home to the Daytona Tortugas minor league team. A newly christened 13-foot-tall Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune statue (Corner of Beach Street & Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114) celebrates the founder of a small school in the early 1900s that evolved into Bethune-Cookman University. She is heralded as a civil rights and women's rights pioneer, and the champion of Black Daytona Beach residents who fought for their most basic needs and rights.

A variety of beachfront and state parks offer trails and picnic areas to enjoy the natural landscapes and explore the flora and fauna of beautiful Central Florida. A favorite is Tomoka State Park (2099 North Beach Street, Ormond Beach, Florida 32174; 386-676-4050). The park protects a variety of natural habitats and endangered species, such as the West Indian manatee, and is a bird watcher's paradise. Visitors can stroll a one-half mile nature trail through a hardwood hammock that was once an 18th century indigo field. The Daytona Beach area also has an impressive collection of hiking and biking trails in settings ranging from naturally beautiful rural areas to urban walkways with waterfront views. The county has a Parks and Trails App, for details on all the options.

Back to those iconic reasons people visit, Daytona Beach’s 23 miles of white sand beaches. Classic must-dos, include:

Taking in a concert at the popular beachfront Daytona Beach Bandshell (70 Boardwalk Avenue, Daytona Beach, Florida 32118; 386-671-8250)

Spending time on Daytona Beach’s iconic boardwalk (12 South Ocean Avenue, Daytona Beach, Florida, 32118; 386-253-0254) and pier (200 Main Street, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114) are a favorite way to make memories for many.

Visiting Daytona International Speedway (1801 West International Speedway Boulevard, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 800-748-7467) where speedway tours are a fantastic way get an up-close look at the world-famous track, with its 31° banking, the infield Fan Zone and the renovated modern motorsports facility.

Take in the NASCAR Racing Experience (1801 West International Speedway Boulevard, Daytona Beach, Florida 32118; 800-237-3889) where fans can drive a NASCAR race car at the "World Center of Racing!" Visitors can choose to drive a race car by themselves or take a ride along as a passenger.

Where to eat
The Daytona Beach area’s culinary scene is also full of surprises. These are just a few of the dining options that represent the diverse culinary experience offered here:

Enjoying dinner and cocktails is a special experience amid the 1930s art deco décor at 31 Supper Club (31 West Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach, Florida 32174; 386-275-1625). The “Havana Vibe” is the setting for an international menu.

The options at Mama Foo Foo (125 Basin Street, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 386-287-0180) include a great cocktail list and creative eclectic menu, and all can be enjoyed while taking in the marina view.

The Cellar (220 Magnolia Avenue, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114; 386-258-0011) is in Daytona Beach’s historic district and known for its exquisite Italian cuisine, excellent wine list and romantic atmosphere.

At Rose Villa Southern Table & Bar (43 West Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach, Florida 32176; 386-615-7673) visitors can dine inside this former bed and breakfast or alfresco, on the porch. The menu features an eclectic mix of Southern inspired cuisine, craft cocktails and extensive wine list.

For a luxurious atmosphere and a 360-degree sunset view, Top of Daytona (2625 South Atlantic Avenue, Daytona Beach Shores, Florida 32118; 386-310-7849) delivers. Perched on the 29th floor of the tallest building along the Atlantic Ocean, this is a setting made for memorable meals.

Pride Journey: Oklahoma City By Joey Amato

11/6/2023

Comments

Since I began Pride Journeys 5 years ago, I have had the incredible opportunity to visit dozens of destinations around the world. Some destinations I visited once, while others left such an impression, that I was yearning to return. Oklahoma City is one of those destinations.

I first visited OKC while on a road trip to Las Vegas. While I was only there for one night, it piqued my interest when I found out they have a viable gayborhood known as the 39th Steet District. During that trip I stayed at a hotel in the neighborhood known as Habana. It has since been updated and rebranded as The District Hotel and served as my home base on this trip.

The Five Best Hiking Cottages For a Free Night In Sweden

Although only a one-night stay is allowed, there are more than 200 cottages and cabins across Sweden where you can sleep for free for one night. A fact that very few people know about, even among Swedes. They can be old forest and mountain huts or pretty cottages, which used to be continuously inhabited and have now been preserved as a cultural monument, or newer buildings which local authorities want to use to encourage an active outdoor lifestyle. The standard of them and how well equipped can vary from very simple to quite comfortable. What they all have in common, however, is their proximity to nature, an interesting local cultural history, space for several guests to sleep and accessibility to new encounters and experiences. Much like the UK boothy system, these cabins cannot be booked in advance.

Here are five of the most beautiful free one-night cabins across Sweden:

Even if our visit may have been provided by various travel suppliers for the purposes of reviewing and writing about them, our opinions are not swayed negatively or positively. Our policy: We sometimes are invited to review a venue. We choose to only write positive articles. If you read one of our articles, you know that we had a positive experience. If we have a negative experience, we simply choose not to write anything about that venue. Our tastes may not be your tastes. We want to focus on the positives in life.
