Omer Gaash - mapping environments in relation to sculpture bodies
London-based photographer and artist Omer Gaash was born in Israel where he went skinny-dipping in the Mediterranean Sea as a child. Later, serving in the Military Intelligence Directorate as a Visual and Mapping Photogrammeter, he honed the skills that would enhance his artistry. Today, his incredible art shows the symbiotic relationship between the human nude and its environment.
How would you describe your photographic art in one sentence?
I’m mapping environments in relation to sculpture bodies
How did your childhood contribute to your view of art?
Our journey in life in general is constantly contributing to our perspective on things. For me growing up in a sea coast town where everybody know everyone it felt safe to explore. We were a group of ten guys and one girl. We were very close - sleepovers, playing catch, building camps, skinny-dipping at the warm Mediterranean sea. That kind of connection between the proximity to nature, the friendship and body freedom is something I’m carrying with me until today. As an artist I’m trying to show this through the angles showing the surrounding and our connection to it by using the landscape not only as a canvas but as something that activates the model's body.
Why is nude photography important in understanding the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature?
In order to connect to ourselves and to nature we first need to experience nakedness, accept changes in our body and our surroundings. simplicity is the key and being naked at our prime stage can clear almost all conversation around society hierarchy and focus on the timeless or the immediate allowing us to see more than just our prejudice thoughts.
Photography is the perfect combination of light, perspective and composition. What inspires you to create such beautiful photography?
First of all, Thank you! I love looking at shapes, I keep searching for them both in nature, architecture and our body, the combinations are endless even though we only have two hands and two legs. I think any moment, place, conversation can be an amazing source of inspiration, as long as we have our own DNA as artists it will always find its way to be manifested in our work even if the initial plan is vague.
What are your plans for the future?
Big plans. I started designing silk scarves as part of my NudeTexture project, available on my website. I hope to work with more cultural institutions and be commissioned to create their next season's visuals. To represent a dance company or theater for example. I am always on the search for my next creation.
