CHICAGO - The 25th Anniversary Tour
CHICAGO - The 25th Anniversary Tour
The Maxwell C. King Center Performance
By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong
It is hard to conceive that we've enjoyed twenty-five years of "Razzle Dazzle CHICAGO!" This fabulous Prohibition era musical is so iconic in its music, costuming and choreography that we must never allow ourselves to forget how incredible it is in every way. Over the last twenty-five years, CHICAGO has been seen in thirty-six different countries and more than by thirty million people!
An eclectic audience of every age from preteen to octogenarian came to "paint the town and all that jazz" for opening night at The Maxwell C. King Center in Melbourne, Florida. The audience was all-in from the opening number of "All That Jazz" and by "Cell Block Tango," they we laughing loudly even if they already knew every funny lyric by heart.
The current cast of CHICAGO features Logan Floyd as Velma Kelly, Katie Frieden as Roxie Hart, Jeff Brooks as Billy Flynn, Christina Wells as Mama Morton, Brian Kalinowski as Amos Hart and G.A. James as Mary Sunshine. Conductor Cameron Blake Kinnear leads a talented orchestra of Jacob Kidder, Randell Lee, Heather Kriesel, Clay Steiner, Jordan Webb, Will Esposito, Andy Sharkey, Nate Huvard, Nick Rosaci, and Jacob Chafatelli.
CHICAGO has earned six Tony Awards, six Academy Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy. Set in the American 1920s when drinking alcoholic beverages was illegal, showgirl Roxie Hart murders the guy she is cheating on her husband with. In jail, she meets showgirl Velma Kelly. Prison matron Mama Morton shows them the rules and tricks of surviving. Roxie steals Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer from Velma. He creates an elaborate scheme to recreate Roxie's image and fool the press, jurors and the public to gain a Not Guilty verdict for Roxie AND thousands of dollars for himself. It is a whole lot of risque fun, great jazz music and fabulous choreography by the legendary Bob Fosse.
We asked Katie Frieden how it feels to portray such an iconic role as as Roxie Hart and have the audience appreciate her work so much? “I love playing the role of Roxie Hart as she is a complex character who experiences a wide range of emotions on her journey to fame. This role has been portrayed by some of my biggest personal inspirations which is such an honor. It was so much fun to perform at the King Center for the Performing Arts with the wonderful Melbourne audience sharing their electric energy with us.”
