THE MONKEY movie review by Steven SkelleY
THE MONKEY movie review by Steven Skelley
While almost nothing is as horrifying as living through the idiocy of another Trump Presidency, times like these call out for a wonderful distraction like the film THE MONKEY.
THE MONKEY is bloody beautiful!
THE MONKEY is gore galore!
THE MONKEY is splatter spectacular!
THE MONKEY is horror hilarity!
THE MONKEY is just what the doctor ordered…if the doctor was a homicidal toy monkey!
I have enjoyed the horror film genre for more than fifty of my sixty-two years. FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA and THE MUMMY drew me in. I continued on through the spine-tingling years of THE EXORCIST and POLTERGEIST. I laughed my way through the stupidity of FRIDAY THE 13TH, HALLOWEEN, FINAL DESTINATION, SCREAM, THE RING, SHARKNADO, THE TERRIFYER and others. But when I read that Stephen King’s short story THE MONKEY was being filmed as a blend of horror comedy, I was all-in. I read Stephen King as a teen and I still read his stuff today.
Directed by Osgood Perkin, THE MONKEY cast includes Theo James (DIVERGENT), Sarah Levy (SCHITT’S CREEK), Adam Scott (SEVERANCE), Elijah Wood (LORD OF THE RINGS), Colin O’Brien (WONKA) and more. THE MONKEY is an absurdly funny horror film. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at all the cringe-worthy deaths and dismemberments.
What’s the movie about, you ask? Two young twin brothers find a wind-up monkey toy in their deceased, airline pilot father’s closet. When they wind the toy up, people around them begin to die horrible, horrible (and hilarious) deaths. They try to destroy the monkey. They try to hide the monkey. Decades later, the monkey returns to their lives and people begin to die all around them once again. Older twin brother Bill is psychotic for good reason. Younger twin brother Hal is now a father himself and has spent his life trying to protect his son from the curse of the monkey.
What THE MONKEY does better than just about any modern horror film is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Yes, there is gore galore but every segue toward each gruesome death is planned out to deliver a much-needed belly laugh along with a plethora of oh-my-god moments. I loved it.
